Nuclear Energy Systems

The Division develops knowledge and skills in design, analysis and technology development in the nuclear field, both fusion and fission, for energy applications.

It provides support to institutions, industrial sector, and society in the areas of safety analysis, sustainability, and design of next-generation nuclear systems, including small modular reactors, as well as technology transfer services to the nuclear and energy industries.

It performs activities related to the conceptualization, design and construction of new research infrastructures, and in the modernization of existing ones, working in support of and in collaboration with the national industry in the sector of advanced technologies.

It participates in national and international research projects, consortia and networks for technology development and nuclear applications, in both fission and fusion fields.

In particular, it coordinates the Department’s activities on the technological development of Generation IV fission nuclear systems and modular reactors (Small Modular Reactor-SMR), with special focus on liquid-metal cooled systems (such as Lead-cooled Fast Reactor - LFR and Accelerator Driven System - ADS).

It provides technical and scientific support to national and international institutions, relevant Ministries, and local and national authorities, supporting the Department in its functions, when required, as national “Technical and Scientific Support Organization” (TSO) for nuclear safety and security, non-proliferation, and nuclear emergency preparedness and response.

Main Tasks and Functions

  • The Division develops knowledge and skills in design, analysis and technology development in the nuclear field, both fission and fusion. It develops, verifies and validates computational codes and models for nuclear applications. It develops, in collaboration with the nuclear and energy industries, new technologies for nuclear applications.
  • It supports the Nuclear Department in its functions, when required, as national “Technical and Scientific Support Organization” (TSO).
  • It coordinates the Department’s activities on nuclear systems for power generation, including SMR, LFR and ADS, using, in cooperation with the Divisions that manage them, the Department’s infrastructures and experimental facilities, and participating in related national, European and international collaborations.
  • It supports nuclear fusion projects such as DTT, ITER, IFMIF-DONES, and DEMO with design, analysis, development, and technology transfer activities. It manages the DRP-Divertor Test Platform laboratories at the ENEA research center in Brasimone and the DTT-Remote Handling Test Facility at CeSMA (University Federico II of Naples).
  • It participates in working groups and committees in major international organizations and European initiatives for nuclear research and sustainability, such as IAEA, OECD-NEA, SNETP, ETSON, ENEN.
  • It manages and implements the RPAS (Remotely Piloted Aircraft Systems) Flight Academy and the Automation and Control Laboratory at the ENEA Research center in Brasimone, also in relation to supporting CBRN activities, environmental and nuclear monitoring.
  • It carries out training, internship, information and communication activities, also in cooperation with universities, research organizations, and the industrial sector.
