National Institute of Metrology of Ionizing Radiation

The Institute ensures the national function assigned to ENEA by law 11 August 1991 n. 273 "Establishment of the national calibration system", of Primary Metrological Institute in the field of ionizing radiation. Based on this function, the INMRI Institute develops and updates, in the field of interest and according to internationally recommended standards, the standard measuring devices that provide, for measurements carried out in the country in the medical field, environmental, industrial and scientific research, the appropriate referability to the International System of Units of Measurement.

Performs the certification functions assigned to ENEA by current legislation, regarding procedures and tests for approval and calibration requirements of measuring instruments in the EU (Law No. 99, 23 July 2009, art. 27, paragraph 37) and the approval criteria of dosimeters used in radiation protection (D. Lgs. 31 July 2020, n. 101).

The priority lines of action are:

  • the development and maintenance of national primary standards: research and development in the field of absolute measurements of ionising radiation, for the production and qualitative evolution of national primary standards and their international validation;
  • the development and standardisation of measurement methods: research into methods for measuring ionising radiation in different applications, with a view to improving their reliability and ensuring their comparability with national standards;
  • nationally and internationally recognized certification: calibration and qualification of ionizing radiation measuring instruments, with reference to standard systems, development and provision of Reference Materials and Inter-comparisons Certified laboratories;
  • accreditation: technical support to ACCREDIA for the accreditation of calibration laboratories (LAT) operating in the country in the field of ionizing radiation, according to the technical and management requirements established by the international bodies responsible;
  • the certification of all acts carried out pursuant to Law n. 273/91.
